The loss of vehicle use endorsement
A very useful endorsement
It goes by different names in different provinces, but it’s always a great add-on to any auto insurance policy. In Ontario, it’s called OPCF20 Coverage for Transportation Replacement, and it covers the reimbursement of any cost incurred while you cannot use your current vehicle after a claim. It comes into effect as soon as your car is wrecked, missing (in the case of a theft), or in the garage, as long as you have coverage for the insured peril. There is a maximum allowed per day and per claim, which you might be able to upgrade if you want more coverage.
Leasing a car
Most people use this endorsement so that they can rent a vehicle right away. If your car is stolen, note that the endorsement only comes into effect at one minute past midnight on the following day, presumably because many cars are found on the same day they are reported stolen. There is no delay otherwise. Some mechanics also have cars they can lend at no cost, but you don’t get to choose what you’ll be driving. The choice is yours.
Public transport and taxis
What most people forget is that the endorsement will also cover any other transportation costs, such as bus and subway tickets and cab fare. It’s probable you can even use Uber, as long as you have a receipt. Keep all your payment stubs and receipts, as the insurer will require them to reimburse you.
