Car Replacement Insurance: What Changes in 2027 for Quebec Buyers

Published on

Planning to buy or lease a new car? Here’s what the 2027 change means when shopping for your car insurance.

What to know for January 1, 2027

  • Dealerships will no longer be allowed to offer replacement insurance under Q.P.F. No. 5.
  • Coverage will remain available through certified insurance representatives and insurance firms via ClicAssure. ClicAssure’s partner brokerages can offer both replacement insurance and replacement cost coverage.
  • Use the time before your vehicle’s delivery to compare your options.

To help you prepare for your purchase, here’s what the change involves, how this coverage works and what to ask before taking delivery of your vehicle.

Buying a car? Here’s where to get replacement insurance

In 2027, you will need to obtain this coverage through a certified representative, such as a damage insurance agent or broker, or an authorized insurance firm. You can already shop for it through these professionals.

A good time to bring it up is while you’re shopping for insurance for your next car. That gives you time to review your options before delivery, instead of adding another decision to the final paperwork at the dealership.

Why are the rules changing?

In its July 30, 2026 announcement (in French), the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF) explains that the reform addresses business practices that did not adequately take consumers’ interests into account.

For you, this is an opportunity to review your needs with an insurance professional. Which coverage suits your vehicle, what does it cost and what conditions apply? Take the time to ask before making your choice.

What does car replacement insurance do?

Your car’s value can decline over time. After a covered loss, your car insurance settlement may therefore be less than the cost of the vehicle you need to replace it.

For a new vehicle, Q.P.F. No. 5 can cover the eligible difference between the value determined by your primary insurer and the value of the replacement vehicle specified in the policy. You must actually replace your vehicle to receive this compensation.

Supplementary coverage. This insurance supplements your primary car insurance: it only provides compensation if your primary insurer has paid a claim for the loss. Your policy’s terms determine the amounts payable.

Replacement insurance or replacement cost coverage: what’s the difference?

Replacement insurance and replacement cost coverage address a similar need, but they are two distinct products.

Three differences between replacement insurance and replacement cost coverage
Feature Replacement insurance
Q.P.F. No. 5
Replacement cost coverage
Q.E.F. No. 43
Policy Separate policy that supplements car insurance. Endorsement added to car insurance.
Insurer Can be different from your car insurer. The same as your car insurer.
Premium Set at purchase for the policy term. May change when your car insurance renews.

Both types of coverage are optional. Eligibility and settlement terms need to be checked for your situation. You can also visit our car insurance with replacement cost coverage page.

Already have protection against depreciation? Show your policy to the insurance professional before adding more coverage. They can help you understand what you already have and identify any overlap.

Four steps to take before your car’s delivery

  1. Gather your vehicle details. Have the model, model year, purchase price, odometer reading and expected delivery date ready. Specify whether you’re buying or leasing.
  2. Ask about both types of coverage. Have the professional confirm which options your vehicle qualifies for and explain the differences that matter to you.
  3. Compare the terms as well as the price. Ask about each offer’s total cost, coverage period, limits and settlement conditions. Find out what you might have to pay out of pocket after a loss.
  4. Confirm the effective date. Before picking up the keys, make sure the insurance professional has confirmed your chosen coverage and when it starts.

A question to ask

“If my car is declared a total loss two years from now, how would my settlement be calculated, and what would I need to do?”

Ask for an explanation that applies to each option you’re considering.
