Universal Life Insurance

Lifetime coverage, premiums you adjust at your own pace

Universal life insurance is permanent life insurance that combines two things in one policy: a death benefit that lasts your whole life, and an investment account that grows tax-sheltered. You choose how much to pay, between a minimum and a maximum: whatever exceeds the cost of your insurance goes into the investment account.

That flexibility is the point. In good years you can deposit more and build savings faster; if money is tight, you can pay only the cost of insurance, or even let the account cover it for a while. Over time you can adjust your coverage, change your investment options and access the accumulated funds.

With ClicAssure.com, one short form gets you universal life insurance quotes from 20+ Canadian insurers. A licensed advisor in your province explains the options and their costs, free and with no obligation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Who is universal life insurance for?
  • People who have maxed out their RRSP and TFSA and want another tax-sheltered place to grow money
  • Estate planning: covering taxes at death, equalizing an inheritance between children, funding a charitable gift
  • Business owners looking for a tax-efficient way to hold savings inside a corporation
  • Anyone who wants lifelong coverage and is comfortable reviewing their policy every few years
What should I know before buying universal life insurance?

Universal life is a powerful tool, but it needs attention. If the investments earn less than expected, you may need to increase your premiums to keep the policy in force. Ask your advisor about the cost of insurance (level for life, or increasing yearly), the investment fees and what happens if you stop paying. A good comparison shows you these numbers side by side.

What is universal life insurance?

A permanent life insurance policy that combines lifelong coverage with a tax-sheltered investment account. You pay a flexible premium: the cost of insurance is deducted, and the rest is invested in the options you choose.

What is the difference between universal life and whole life insurance?

Whole life gives you guarantees: fixed premiums, a guaranteed cash value and, often, dividends. Universal life gives you flexibility: you decide how much to pay and how the savings are invested, and the growth depends on those choices. Both cover you for life.

  Universal life Whole life
Premiums Flexible, between a minimum and a maximum Fixed and guaranteed
Savings component Investment account you manage; growth not guaranteed unless you choose guaranteed options Guaranteed cash value, plus possible dividends
Involvement Review the policy periodically Set it and forget it
Best for Control, tax-sheltered investing, larger amounts Guarantees and simplicity
Is the investment in a universal life policy guaranteed?

Only if you choose guaranteed investment options, similar to a GIC. Index-linked or fund-based options can grow faster but can also lose value, which may require higher premiums later to keep the policy in force.

Can I stop paying premiums?

Yes, as long as the accumulated funds are sufficient to cover the monthly cost of insurance. If the account runs out, you must resume payments or the policy lapses. This is why periodic reviews matter.

How is universal life insurance taxed in Canada?

Growth inside the policy is tax-sheltered within the limits set by the Income Tax Act, and the death benefit is paid tax-free to your beneficiaries. Withdrawals during your lifetime may be partly taxable; policy loans are treated differently. An advisor can explain what applies to your situation.
