What the ranking reveals
The RAV4 stands well ahead of the pack
With 921 thefts in Quebec, the Toyota RAV4 accounts for nearly 13% of the thefts recorded among the ten models in the ranking. Its popularity and resale value make it a particularly attractive target.
SUVs dominate
Seven of the ten models are SUVs. In its 2025 report, Équité also notes that SUVs accounted for 50% of all vehicles stolen in Quebec, across all makes.
Theft volume and theft rate tell different stories
The most stolen model is not necessarily the one with the highest theft rate. For example, the Toyota C-HR has a theft rate of 1.32%, compared with 0.64% for the RAV4, but the number of insured C-HRs is much smaller.
Thefts declined in 2025, but the risk remains significant
Quebec went from 10,290 passenger vehicle thefts in 2024 to 7,742 in 2025, a decrease of 25%. This is important progress, but it does not mean the problem has been solved. Quebec’s recovery rate was only 48%, meaning that more than half of stolen vehicles had not been recovered when the data was compiled.
Across Canada, Équité Association estimates that auto theft claims still total approximately $900 million per year. The organization has also observed changes in the methods used by criminal networks, including re-VINing, dismantling vehicles for parts, exporting stolen vehicles and auto-financing fraud.
There are fewer thefts than at the height of the crisis, but newer, popular and easily resold vehicles remain particularly attractive to organized criminal networks.
Why are some vehicles targeted more often?
Several factors may explain why certain models repeatedly appear in the ranking. It is not simply a matter of whether a vehicle is “easy to steal.”
- Model popularity: a widely owned vehicle provides a larger pool of potential targets and strong demand for replacement parts.
- Resale value: newer SUVs and pickup trucks can generate substantial profits in Canada and abroad.
- Parts availability: some vehicles are dismantled and their components are sold separately.
- Keyless entry systems: some technologies can be bypassed through relay attacks, reprogramming or access to the vehicle’s electronic network.
- International demand: stolen vehicles may be exported or assigned a new vehicle identification number before being resold.
Does a frequently stolen vehicle cost more to insure?
Theft risk is one of the many factors an insurer may consider when setting a premium. Repair costs, the vehicle’s value, where you live, your driving record, how the vehicle is used and the coverage you select may also affect the calculation.
Two similarly priced vehicles can therefore result in very different premiums. For heavily targeted models, some insurers may require a specific anti-theft device, apply a special deductible or offer a discount when an approved system is installed. Practices vary from one insurer to another.
This is why it remains worthwhile to compare multiple car insurance quotes , especially after purchasing a new vehicle, moving or receiving a significant increase at renewal.
How to reduce the risk of vehicle theft
Équité Association recommends a layered approach: no single measure is perfect, but adding several obstacles can discourage thieves or significantly slow them down.
Frequently asked questions about vehicle theft in Quebec
What is the most stolen vehicle in Quebec?
In Équité Association’s most recent detailed ranking, the Toyota RAV4 ranks first in Quebec with 921 thefts recorded in 2024. The 2021 model year was stolen most often.
Did vehicle theft increase in Quebec in 2025?
No. Passenger vehicle thefts decreased by 25%, from 10,290 in 2024 to 7,742 in 2025. The number remains high, however, and Quebec’s recovery rate was 48%.
Why are SUVs targeted so often?
Newer SUVs are sought after because of their resale value, popularity, demand for parts and export potential. Some models also have vulnerabilities related to keyless entry systems.
Does an anti-theft device automatically reduce the premium?
Not automatically. An approved system may qualify for a discount from some insurers or be required to insure a higher-risk vehicle, but the rules vary. It is best to confirm the requirements before installation.
What should you do immediately after your vehicle is stolen?
Contact the police, then your insurer. Have the vehicle identification number, registration, details about where and when the theft occurred, and any information from a tracking system ready. Do not attempt to recover the vehicle yourself.
Compare your insurance, even if your vehicle appears in the ranking
Insurers do not all assess risk in the same way. Comparing offers can help you find coverage suited to your vehicle and budget.
