Car Insurance - How to Pay Less

Published on par Jessica Goulet

How Can You Reduce the Cost of Your Car Insurance?

Car insurance is mandatory in Quebec, but that doesn’t mean you have to pay that much. Let’s take a closer look at the three main rating factors to see how you can save even more:

- Your current situation (age, where you live and how you use your vehicle)

- Your driving record (years of experience, traffic tickets and claims)

- Your vehicle (make and year, required coverage and deductibles)

The Importance of Shopping for Insurance Online

Your current situation has a decisive impact on your insurance premium. The higher the risk of a claim, the higher the premium. Young men under 25 cause more accidents than 50-year-old women and consequently pay more than they do.

Where you live is also an important factor, depending on the crime rate, as is the number of kilometres you drive every day to get to work.

When you shop online, you’ll see that the weight given to each of these factors varies from one insurer to another, which is why it pays to shop online every year!

Is Your Driving Record Roadworthy?

Your experience as a driver matters even more in setting your premium. How many years have you held your licence, and how many traffic tickets and claims have you had in the last six years? A string of small claims or a single accident for which you are held responsible can double your premium.

Insurers are willing to review your file every year on request, but they will refuse to insure a risk that is too high. If paying less really matters to you, for goodness’ sake, watch your driving!

The Art of Choosing the Right Coverage

Some vehicles are very popular with thieves, while others are more prone to vandalism. The coverage you choose has a major impact on your premium. When it comes to civil liability, don’t skimp on the amount: one or two million dollars is the amount insurers recommend.

Chapter B2 (Collision) coverage will be required if the vehicle is new or leased; it’s a requirement of the lending institution, but also an investment for you in the event of an at-fault accident.

Chapter B3, which covers all non-collision losses (fire, theft, vandalism…), is almost always advisable too, except for an older vehicle of lesser value. You can, however, raise your deductibles or simply shop around for the best price, since every insurer is different.
